NEW Option!  One on one mandolin building workshops.  Very simply put, this is basically like an apprenticeship.  The first week will cost you $1,000 for five intensive days of training and instruction.  After that you may come back as often as you like and use my facility for only $75.00 per day of course that means I will be there to assist you with questions and problems as well.   If you are interested in such an option, please read on and then let us know of your interest via E-mail.   NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ACCIDENTS, the student assumes all the risk of personal injury. 

Mandolin Building Workshop held at Valley Springs Ranch, near Newburg, MO.  Master mandolin builder Jerry Rosa is the instructor.  This class will teach you how to build a high end "F" style mandolin. 

Class Details:  (since this is a "one on one" type of class, almost every thing is optional, including class days, times, etc.)

  • The class will run for 5 days, usually Monday through Friday, Dates are negotiable from 9:00 a.m. till 5:00 p.m. with a 1.5 hour lunch break and rest breaks as dictated by the students.
  • The tuition is $1,000. per student.  Tools and materials necessary for class may be brought along or purchased from us.
  • Class size will be limited to only 2 participants at a time which will ensure plenty of one on one help from the instructor.
  • Students will learn all aspects of building a mandolin including many shortcuts and techniques.  The course text book will be Roger Siminoff's Bluegrass Mandolin Construction Manual.
  • There will be daily classroom lectures and demonstrations followed by hands on practice.
  • Students will work at their own pace and should be able to complete a "hand carved" "F" style mandolin top in the first week.  Yes, I know most classes build an entire instrument in a week.  But, think about it... that is just basically gluing a kit together.  You don't need my expertise for that!
  • The course will cover all aspects of building a mandolin and will specifically include: wood properties and selection, carving, scraping, inlay, binding, gluing, clamping, jigs, fixtures, neck, top, back, sides and fret-board construction, and various types of finishes.
  • The amount of time spent on any subject will depend directly on the feedback and desires of the students.
  • At class completion, students will have been given the knowledge and information necessary to finish their own "F" style mandolin.

Materials - Students will either furnish the following items or need to purchase them at time of class:

  • Brass finger plane with one regular curved blade and one serrated blade (cost $65 if purchased (second blade additional cost))
  • One high quality book-matched top plate (cost $30.00 to $150 depending on species and grade selected)
  • One copy of Roger Siminoff's Bluegrass Mandolin Construction Manual. ($38.00)
  • One cabinet scraper (pre-sharpened and burnished) ($15.00)

Furnished by Us:

  • Patterns (top, back, and peg head) taken directly from 1924 "signed" Lloyd Loar mandolin
  • Full use of the shop, equipment, and required tools

Accommodations:

  • Students will have the option to book their own room at a local motel (within 15 miles on major highway) Click HERE for a list of local motels.
  • Or, students my bring tents, campers, or motor homes and stay at the Valley Springs Ranch Campsite.  Electric hookups (20 and 30 amp) are available at $10 per night.  Water is available at a central location near the campground.  Waste hookups are not available.

Student Responsibilities:

  • Students must bring a good attitude for a fun and information filled week
  • Students may take as many "still" photos during class as they like.  Video cameras will NOT be allowed.
  • Students may bring instruments they are already working on for advice and to work on during the class if so desired.
  • Students are also encouraged to bring instruments to play in off time.

Other Amenities:

  • Peace and Quiet abounds as you will be situated at the end of a 3-mile road on a 280 acre ranch surrounded by Mark Twain National Forest.
  • There are miles of hiking trails on the ranch
  • The Little Piney River is within walking distance and is great for swimming and fishing
  • The ranch is situated directly between two large towns Rolla, and St. Roberts.  Both towns are within a 15 minute drive, and are loaded with restaurants, stores, motels and both have a Super Wal-Mart.
  • The ranch is equipped with "wireless internet" and should be available for use during non-class time.

Cancellation Policy:

Students will be allowed to cancel up to 30 days prior to the class and receive a full refund.  Cancellations received with less than 30 days notice prior to class will receive a 50% refund.  Refunds will NOT be given with less than 10 days notice prior to start of class.
